A Present to Tusheti from GIZ
The following are the state forest managment bodies in Georgia: the LEPL National Forestry Agency, the LEPL Agency of Protected Areas of Georgia, the LEPL Forestry Agency of Adjara and Akhmeta Municipality. The latter is the only local municipality body which manages the 5029 ha forest on Tushti Protected Landscape territory on the municipality level.
In the summer of 2017 with the help and effort of German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ-Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) and also through financial support (within the framework of the project Integrated Management in the Southern Caucasus), forest inventory has been made in the Tusheti Protected Landscape forests and recommendations have been drawn which envisage conducting sanitary tree felling in these forests and in this way meeting the needs of the local population for wood. Sanitary tree felling means to regularly withdraw damaged, withered, dead, broken by wind, diseased, fallen, etc. trees out of the forests and place them on the pre-defined location in compliance with the law. Carrying out all the above-mentioned actions will improve the general sanitarian condition of Tusheti forests and will reduce the risk of fires.
In order to better and more efficiently meet the needs of the local population for wood withdrawn form the forests, our German partner organization GIZ presented us with a gift: this is a wood sawmill MIRWOOD LM-29, produced in Canada. It costs 33 824 GL and is one of the best models of its kind.
